Overview

ENERGEX is a B2B startup helping commercial entities like hospitals, malls, auditorium, etc. with innovative and customized lighting solutions through sustainable, affordable and abundance of expertise in the domain.

About the project

Energexae’s Energy Management Dashboard is a real time energy tracking SaaS application for Smart Lighting. The dashboard contains features like Real time energy consumption & savings, Anomaly detection, Energy optimization, Energy Heatmap & many more

For this project I have helped the team with their MVP launch of energy management dashboard & component design.

Apart from the dashboard design, I have also helped in creating the mobile version of the official website

Challenges

Facility managers relying on traditional lighting struggle with very limited visibility into where and how energy is being consumed, forcing them to depend on delayed utility bills and manual meter readings rather than real-time data. Any change—like adjusting schedules or replacing fixtures—requires on-site intervention, coordination with multiple vendors, and paper-based approvals, making even small optimizations slow and costly. Faults often go unnoticed until occupants complain or bills spike, so maintenance is reactive instead of planned. As a result, they cannot confidently quantify savings, justify retrofit investments to finance, or standardize best practices across multiple buildings.

High energy cost & inefficient traditional lighting

Lack of awareness about long-term cost benefits of LED conversion, with customers focused only on initial purchase price

Poor quality products

Customers face significant risks from low-quality and counterfeit lighting products flooding the market, creating safety hazards and damaged trust in LED technology

Complex installation challenges

Customers struggle with technical complexity of modern lighting installation ongoing maintenance requirements, and lack of skilled local support, particularly for commercial applications and smart lighting systems.

Solution

We’re giving facility managers three superpowers. First, they get real-time visibility into energy consumption—no more waiting 30 days for utility bills to figure out what’s happening. Second, we’re adding smart alerts that predict equipment failures before they happen, so instead of paying AED 18K for emergency repairs, they schedule a AED 2.5K maintenance visit three weeks early. And third, for managers like Samir who juggle 15 properties, we built a unified dashboard that lets him see which hotel is performing best, copy what’s working to all the others with one click, and cut his weekly coordination time from 20 hours down to 2. Basically, we’re turning facility managers into energy optimization ninjas.

Real-time energy visibility

Smart IoT sensors deployed across all systems, integrated with a cloud-based Energy Monitor Dashboard that provides instant visibility into consumption at facility, system, zone, and device levels.

Crop simulation

Clarity and transparency in designing an intervention through a goal and impact oriented roadmap presented to the concerned stakeholder

Multi-property portfolio management

A centralized portfolio dashboard allowing facility managers (like Mohammed with 15 hotels) to view all properties simultaneously, ranked by energy efficiency, with industry benchmarking and bulk action capabilities.

Research

During my initial research, I discovered that Ahmed, a Dubai marketing manager, was paying 1200 AED for electricity due to inefficient lighting. Fatima, a restaurant owner in Jeddah, lost revenue every time her fluorescent lights failed during business hours. Mohammed, an Abu Dhabi facility manager, couldn’t meet his company’s 40% energy reduction mandate without reliable smart lighting solutions.

Research insights

Trust is currency

73% of customers had bad experiences with online lighting purchases, primarily due to quality concerns.

Technical Overwhelm

89% of customers felt overwhelmed by technical specifications and compatibility requirements

Fragmented journey

Customers were forced to coordinate between 3-5 different vendors for complete lighting solutions

Problem statement

“How might we enable facility managers to prove verified energy savings to skeptical CFOs within 30 days of a smart lighting retrofit, without requiring manual data collection or complex spreadsheets?”
